70s OST- top 10

Being super busy at work, this is the fastest and closest to my heart post I could do about the 70s.

love 70s music, because my favorite composers, RD Burman and SD Burman were shining brightly and strong, and most of my favorite OSTs from the period are from them. RD especially had great bonding with Gulzaar, who without doubt, gave his best lyrics to the composer. And Kishore had finally come into his own (and how!) singing every kind of song with unmatched vivacity- or sadness, as needed.

My favorite OST is from the year I was born in: Shalimaar, from 1978.

Notice that in the American version, Rex Harrison (fititngly) is on the poster- though I have a feeling putting Zeenat on the poster would have sold more tickets :) The movie went straight to video here, and didnt do very well upon release in India either. The movie itself is really fun, but the songs are tremendous. This is my possible favorite: Aruna teaches dancing while Dharam lazes in his cute newsboy cap, and Premnath gets shot! The dancers don't bother much, and get back to the swing of things as he is carried out.

The others I love, in no particular order:

Yaadon ki Baarat (1973)

Yes I know the title song is everyone's (well almost everyone's favorite)- but I like this the most.

Caravan (1971) Another Nasir Hussain film (there are tons of those on this list). But I really really love this song, and so the film made the cut as well!

Kabhi Kabhi (1976) One of my favorite 70s and Shashi movies, this movie has tons of great songs, but my favorite is perhaps the least popular of them. I have a special kinship to it- you see, my parents gave their tailor 6 tickets to the movie, and made him watch it as many times, and therefore the white gown worn by Neetu in the song became my mom's wedding gown. (All together now- awwwww).

As much of a Gulzar fan that I am, I do not love the movie. But the OST blows your mind. Everytime.

Jawani Diwani (1972)

Crazy students unrest- fabulous costumes- a stupid doll. Also one of the few memorable movies of Rabhir Kapoor. And the OST- fun! And the poster- fab!

I had a huge mental tussle between this song and "Samne ye kaun aaya"- still not sure which is better- but they are both so perfect!

Hum Kissi se Kum Nahin (1977)

YET another Nasir Hussain, starrign Tariq. as bad an actor as the latter was, Nasir made sure he got the best songs. And who can resist flying away on giant balloons?

Chupke Chupke (1975)

Really, who doesn't love this?

As great a comedy as the movie is, the songs are amazing as well. This is my personal favorite.

Aandhi (1975)

I don't normally do weepy movies- but this was really really good.

My mom used to play some of the songs on her guitar (2 mom references in 1 post!), and this is the song I like best.

Abhimaan (1973)

This movie could have gone so wrong- after all so many movies about singer have. But in the hands of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, that'd be impossible.

Of course, this is a very constricted list, since I could only pick 10. You will of course, have your own favorites!

Jawani Diwani, Caravan, Yaadon Ki Baraat and Hum Kisise Se Kam Nahin account for most of my favorite 70s songs - almost every song on the OST is worth listening to. One song that I would add to my list is Asha's lovely Do lafzon ki hai from The Great Gambler.

Lovely story about Tera phoolon jaise rang - does that make you a child of Kabhi Kabhi? ;-D

What an amazing choice of movies. I love and own each one and note the shout-out to R.D. (and S.D.) here. Only vintage and only the best here.

Lovely list... I adore each and everyone, though like you said I've got some other favorites too. What a fun collection this would be to put on my ipod next.

Great list here, I especially looooved the Yaadon Ki Baraat OST, especially the title song, which I think is the anthem for lost and found children of the 70's!

Yaadon ki baaraat is also totally one of my favourite soundtracks. Lekar hum & Chura liya are such great tracks.

Love your picture choices for the oldies as always. :D

Bollyviewer: Ah- some song always does get left out- so many favs, hai na. I do feel a at least a comraderie with Kabhi Kabhie- that song makes me extra happy- I can almost imagine the chagrin of the tailor as he watched it 6 times :)

Anirban: There can never be enough shout outs to SD and RD, can there? They made they 70s.

Bollywoodeewana: I have yet to appreciate other composers, you are right of course. Poster-prem leads me to do extensive boolean searches with great frequency- and the results are so worth it!

Kanan: Yes so true- I think I need to reload my flash drive too...

Rum: That's the best caption for the song/movie ever!

Veracious: Yadon was super- I cant ever tire of the movie or its songs. Your comemnts encourage em that all the time I put in searches for posters are not wasted :D

Beautiful choices, some of which I am yet to hear, so I'm off to find those. I'm glad you mentioned 'Chupke Chupke' - it's music sometimes seems under-appreciated. I love the title track and the beautifully charming 'Ab Ke Saajan Sawan Mein'. The story about your mom's wedding gown is lovely. Love all the posters as well.
